Research Implementation Funding Program

Mn/DOT’s FY05 Research Implementation Funding Program supports the application of results from Mn/DOT research projects. Successful implementation occurs when practical benefits are realized by the application of research. The goal of the Research Implementation Funding Program is to encourage and support activities that apply research results in ways that measurably improve the performance of Mn/DOT’s investments in transportation resources. Projects should support Mn/DOT’s Strategic Plan.
Research Services will solicit for implementation proposals in April 2004. Proposal reviews and selections will take place in July 2004 with funds available in October 2004. A six-member panel representing diverse functional areas within Mn/DOT reviews and approves funding proposals for this program. Proposals are welcomed from disciplines throughout Mn/DOT for the application of research findings and current technology at all levels. Implementation projects may include the production of reports, brochures, videos, CD ROMs, training programs, and more. Successful past implementation projects include: Roundabouts: The Implementation Program funded training courses for Minnesota traffic engineers on the design and building of roundabouts, based on the FHWA publication Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, which featured best practices from around the world. Preventing Stem Girdling Roots: The Implementation Program partially funded the production of a training video from the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture on preventing this tree disease. Living Snow Fences The Implementation Program provided funding for an interactive Web site on the design of living snow fences, including a snow climatology database. Researchers were honored with the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies 2003 Research Partnership Award for this project. The interactive snow-control design module allows users to obtain necessary climatological attributes for road and snow fence design in their area (see www.climate.umn.edu/snow_fence). Questions concerning this program may be directed to Clark Moe, Research Implementation and Evaluation Coordinator, at 651/282-2473.
